Taylor Swift: The songs I wrote at 16 are a gift

Image
Taylor Swift has definitely done a lot of growing up since breaking onto the music scene at age 16. The 21-year-old says the most notable change is in her songwriting. In an interview with MTV , Swift says that as an adult, she takes a different approach when writing about hurt and heartache. "I had this song called 'Picture to Burn,' that's talking about how 'I hate your truck,' and 'I hate that you ignored me,' 'I hate you,'" she says of the tune from her 2006 debut album. "Now, the way that I would say that and the way that I would feel that kind of pain is a lot different." Swift adds that she has experienced a lot of personal growth since making her first album. "I look back on the record I made when I was 16, and I'm so happy I made it," she says. "I got to immortalize those emotions that when you're so angry, you hate everything. It's like recording your diary over the years, and that...

Sin City silliness on 'The Bachelorette'

Image
Last night's episode of "The Bachelorette" began with Chris Harrison ordering the 18 remaining suitors in the living room to explain how the show works. Even after advancing to the next round, few of the suitors understand the concept of shaving. William is the recipient of the first one-on-one date with Ashley, with a promise that he'll be making a splash in Las Vegas. Pools and Vegas - we can strike two show trademarks off our "Bachelorette" bingo card. Meanwhile, "Phantom" Jeff, who's now wearing a knit cap to go with his mask, pledges to take the mask off on his first one-on-one date with Ashley. Good thing, as his new look screams "ready to rob a bank by the fourth episode." Ashley and William are now in Las Vegas, where they drop by a cake shop, then head to a jeweler to look at rings. Next stop is the wedding chapel, where William hands Ashley a potted plant for her bouquet. Hold everything!  Is the show ending af...

James McAvoy: Brit filmmakers dumb down movies for Americans

Image
The American-made superhero flick "X-Men: First Class" may seem an unusual choice for Scottish star James McAvoy, who earned critical raves for British dramas like "The Last King of Scotland" and "Atonement"—but then again, the actor says U.K. movies just aren't what they used to be. "We make loads of movies to try and hit in America, and yet it's never the ones aimed at America that do well. We dumb our movies down because we want Americans to understand them," the BAFTA winner tells SkyNews. "Then Americans watch it and go, 'This is a really unsophisticated, dumbed-down movie. Why would we buy this? Why do we like this? We don't.' It's like we're patronizing them and short-changing ourselves," he says. McAvoy's "X-Men" co-star Kevin Bacon advises filmmakers to continue to play it smart on screen. "I think the whole thing is to keep trying to make the best possible movie that y...

Depp will be a legend, says 'Pirates' director

Image
Edward Scissorhands. The Mad Hatter. Captain Jack Sparrow. Johnny Depp has played his share of quirky characters over the years, and according to "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" director Rob Marshall, they're just the types of roles that will make him a Hollywood legend. “He's as vivid as those great stars of the past, Humphrey Bogart and Clark Gable and Errol Flynn," Marshall tells the L.A. Times. "Many, many, many years from now, when people look at this generation of Hollywood, he will be considered the great star of this era. He's his own thing and he takes major chances every single time he makes a film." Marshall and "Pirates" producer Jerry Bruckheimer both believe Depp would have made a great silent-movie star. "He's like a Rudolph Valentino," says Marshall. "He has such a command of expression without words. The humor and the feelings he can convey with his face alone is extraordinary...

Showbiz Tonight' Flashpoint: One-on-one with Lady Gaga

We've got our one-on-one with Lady Gaga today on "Showbiz Tonight." The superstar is speaking out about her racy “Edge of Glory” performance on “American Idol” that caused plenty of controversy, and she's also got a blunt message for her critics. Something else I uncovered on the shoot: Lady Gaga's as gracious as they come. Since it's no secret that Gaga loves New York's Lower East Side and as someone who loves the neighborhood as much as Gaga, I wanted to pick her up something special from a place that gave her so much. Just a few steps away from my apartment is Economy Candy Store, an old-fashioned, family-owned candy shop that sells hundreds of different kinds of chocolates, candies, nuts and old-time favorites. In deciding on what to give Gaga, I knew I had to pick her up lots of candy – and throw in an Economy Candy T-shirt, because if she really likes the LES as much as she said she does, this would definitely make her happy. So after Lady G...

Cheryl Cole won't be on British 'X Factor,' either

Cheryl Cole won't be on British 'X Factor,' either After reportedly getting replaced on the U.S. version of "The X Factor," Cheryl Cole seems to have been dumped from the U.K. edition too. The former Girls Aloud singer, who had been a judge on Britain's "X Factor" since 2008, was not included among the panel members announced by series producer Simon Cowell on Monday, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Those who did make the cut: Destiny's Child singer Kelly Rowland, "Take That" singer-songwriter Gary Barlow, Tulisa Contostavlos of British hip-hop band N-Dubz, and boy-band impresario Louis Walsh. "These four will be totally up for it, and each of them bring a different attitude," said Cowell. Cole's departure from the show may have been her own doing. According to the Hollywood Reporter, she is said to have snubbed Cowell after she was reportedly fired from the U.S. series. Cole, who is believed to hav...

Adele postpones 5 tour dates due to laryngitis

Image
Adele has joked that stage fright makes her sick to her stomach, but now the singer is battling a different illness: laryngitis. The chart-topping Brit has been forced to postpone five dates on her sold-out North American tour as a result, a statement says on her website. The “Rolling in the Deep” songstress was diagnosed last Thursday in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and doctors ordered immediate rest. Although she held off on that Minneapolis show, she did try to take the stage in Denver that Saturday, but it was too soon to tune up. Her tour stops in Salt Lake City (May 29), Vancouver (May 31), Seattle (June 1) and Portland (June 3) have also been postponed. The tour will pick up again in San Francisco on June 4, and her Minneapolis performance has been rescheduled for June 22. Adele wrote on her website on May 26, "I’ve been told to cancel tonight's show in Minneapolis because my voice has gone. I hate to cancel especially at such short notice. I am truly devastated... Please fo...
